Introduction
Steve Neale's Genre theory is that "Genre's all contain instances of repetition and difference" Neale argues that the film and its genre are defined by two things:
- how much it conforms to its genre's individual conventions and stereotypes
- how much it differs from them
Genres change over time because of the publics point of view and social interests, how technology improves, for example In The Sweeney, they would have each episode different crime as they didn't have many tv channels at the time so if you missed one episode you wouldn't be lost when watching the next episode, where as now In Luther the crimes and storyline goes through the series but if you miss an episode you can always watch it on catch up or record.
Luther is a typical character for crime drama because he shows that he's a aggressive cop who finds anyway to solve the crime and catch the criminal even if he can't arrest them, like Alice for instance she killed her parents and her dog, she hid the gun in the dog and when the dog got cremated the fingerprints on the gun got damage but she hid the gun in the ern which Luther breaks into her house to steal.
Alice is a typical character for crime drama because she's a smart independent psychopaths, who outsmarts Luther...
Zoe a less conventional character for a crime drama, because she's part of an another path in Luther, apart from the crimes, Luther and Zoe have relationship problems, where Zoe finds a new boyfriend and Luther gets angry and breaks the door, during the first episode Luther keeps thinking of Zoe throughout the episode.
In conclusion, i think the extent to which the characters in Luther are typical of the genre are very limited even though some characters such as Luther and Alice the protagonist and antagonist are typical of the genre.
